AccuPOS and MAS 90 – quick review

September 22, 2009

CashRegister.jpg

Are you looking for a point of sale system for Sage MAS 90 or MAS 200? Here’s a quick review done by 90Minds member Bill Pfahnl based on an implementation of AccuPOS and MAS 90 that he was recently involved with.

The integration link is straightforward and works with VI to import a daily sales totals for each till and an invoice in S/O Invoice Data Entry – all automatic. The invoice summarizes total sales for each inventory item along with the total money collected as the deposit amount for clearing later (tender summary) so the invoice should always be net zero. A special POS customer is set up for these invoices. You can also sell to MAS 90 customers (with or without terms) and those sales will import as their own invoice.
Accupos is an award winning Point Of Sale, Inventory Management and Time Clock solutions worldwide for users of QuickBooks, Peachtree by Sage, Simply Accounting by Sage, Sage MAS 90 and 200, and Line 50 by Sage.

The software is a Sage Endorsed Solution which means it has been tested and verified by Sage and is marketed by them.

Follow the link below to read more of Bill’s initial first impressions and see how he liked AccuPOS and the integration to MAS 90.

MAS 90 Trivia – just for fun

September 17, 2009

linked in mas90 trivia
Anyone for some Sage MAS 90 and MAS 200 trivia?

Jeffory M. Urquhart who is an ERP Implementation Specialist at Microliance in Florida has started an interesting trivia game over on LinkedIn that asks some tough but fascinating questions about MAS 90.

You’ll need to go way back with the product because Jeff’s questions are not for the beginner.

Jeff’s list of questions appear on the MAS 90 group on LinkedIn (click here to join first). This is not an official Sage forum, rather it’s a spot that fellow users and consultants can gather to exchange information, network — and even play the occasional game of MAS 90 trivia.

Here’s the list of MAS 90 trivia questions.

  1. What does M.A.S stand for?
  2. What did SOTA stand for?
  3. What was 09SAM?
  4. What  operating system platform was MAS 90 originally written for?
  5. When initially marketed, what was the application language that MAS 90 was written in?
  6. In the original versions, how were terminal IDs set?
  7. What year was MAS 90 introduced?
  8. What was the first version of MAS 90 for Windows?

What’s interesting is several long time Sage employees have added questions like the one Erika Jelovsek poses:

Ahhh, but if you really want to call yourself a historian of all things MAS 90 , you need to be able to define the acryonyms for these release names. And Craig, no jumping in right away…..let the non-Sage folks take a trip in the wayback machine to come up with these answers! ERBY, MERBY, LEFTY, IMSOPO, and, my personal favorite, TAMAN.

For the answers to these questions – and to read several more interesting tidbits of MAS 90 trivia – head over to the MAS 90 LinkedIn group. You’ll have to join the group but membership is free and you can leave anytime.

How to export a long fixed length string in Crystal Reports

September 16, 2009

long string crystal export.jpg

Have you ever tried to create a fixed length export file with Crystal Reports? These are typically files you create to send to some third party like a bank. They’ll give you a fixed length record layout and tell you where each field should go and how long it must be.

Everything works well so long as you don’t have a super long length of text.

Well today I had a client that wanted to export a fixed length line of text that was 200 characters long. Crystal Reports wouldn’t export to text without wrapping the line which would have been a problem for the bank to read.

Exporting to a text file via Crystal Reports appears to have a hard limit of a certain size width that’s keyed into how wide the paper is as defined by your printer..

Smaller fonts can combat this to some extent but in my experience not completely.

Some suggestions were to shrink fonts (works to the extent that the fonts can be made small enough) and try different printer drivers that may support larger paper widths (not all drivers support larger paper and it can be a pain to install and maintain a standard printer driver on every machine).

Here’s what ultimately worked for me to export a very wide Crystal Report to text:

Within Crystal Reports 10 – Instead of selecting txt as the export source I selected “record style columns no space” and checked off both “same number style as in report” and “same date formats as in report”

Have not fully tested against the bank yet but appears ok in the WordPad preview.

What’s new in MAS 90 3.50 through 4.2?

September 8, 2009

mas90 enhancement relase notes.jpg

One question that we’ve heard time and time again as MAS 90 upgrades are released is “what’s new?”.

Often this can be a difficult list to remember – especially if the person asking is several release levels back on the software. It’s easy to remember what has been added from version 4.1 to 4.2 — but how about from 3.50 to 4.2?

If you’re curious about all the enhancements that Sage has made to MAS 90 and MAS 200 since version 3.5 then you may wish to review this handy list on their site.

A detailed list of every change is available on a release by release basis. The chronology starts at version 3.5 and extends to 4.2. There is no login required – simply click away at the link below.

Sage MAS 90 Service Updates Now Quarterly

September 7, 2009

service updates mas90.jpg

The last service update for Sage MAS 90 and MAS 200 version 4.3 was issued 6/29/09. According to several consultants who have contacted us – Sage has told them that service updates will be issued on a quarterly basis instead of monthly.

Service updates for Sage MAS 90 and MAS 200 are released for the most current version of the software only (currently 4.3) and contain a bundle of fixes which are self-installing and correct noted issues.

Users of older supported versions of MAS 90 (prior to the current level) will still need to load program fixes individually as the service update bundles will continue to only be released for the current levels.

Please consult with a competent Sage Business Partner prior to installing any service updates. These fixes contain program changes which could cause any enhancements (including Sage’s Extended Solutions) to stop working.

In general we recommend loading service updates for MAS 90 only if you (or your Sage Business Partner) are in the process of logging a support case with Sage or see that a program patch or service update fixes a specific issue that you are experiencing.

In all instances, we recommend you contact your Sage Business Partner for advise on when and how to load any service updates before trying to install them yourself.

Error 88 Sy_ReportEngine.pvc Line xxx [Solved]

September 4, 2009

dotmatrix.jpg

I’ve run into this on only a couple of occasions – most of the time in Sales Order.

The symptoms are an Error 88 SY_ReportEngine followed by a line #.

Other sales order forms should print correctly — the problem is usually just one form code — typically a packing list or shipping label.

Check to see that the printer is valid and that you can print other Crystal Forms.

If both of the above check out then I’ve successfully used the fix below:

Listed below is a copy of what SY_ReportSetting.m4t should look like. Yours will be a little different but the field names should be roughly the same.

For the purposes of this error message you only care about the last 4 or 5 fields .

Note that after a user incorrectly accessed the report (not able to track down the exact steps) that fields 38-41 were changed by MAS to bad values.

The values in the field below are what should be used.

Key=[S /O0000000006SO_SHIPPINGLABELS_UI.STANDARD ]

40 PaperSource………… 15.00

To correct this issue (only after you’ve ruled out the usual suspects like a problem with Crystal or bad print or corrupt form) — I’ve changed field #39 (which may be labeled with a different number) to 1.

In a support case I just had the number 258 was in field #39 instead of 1.

Changing the 258 to a 1 made the problem go away.

Requires familiarity with Data File Display Maintenance as well as a backup of your SY_ReportSetting.

This file is located in the SY_SYSTEM folder.

If any of this sounds scary or unfamiliar – contact your Sage Business partner.

Always backup first.
